How do I open/fix a pocket-watch?
I have this pocket watch that a friend gave me. It's very nice, despite being a bit tarnished, but it doesn't appear to actually work. I decided to try my hand at fixing it and can't seem to get it to open. In most videos I see people simply slide or unscrew the back part off, but it doesn't budge on my pocket watch. I noticed a small indentation-looking thing on the side of the back and made the possibly-correct assumption that I'm supposed to open it with that. Needless to say, I tried prying it open to no avail. I'm not sure what kind of pocketwatch it is, and I don't want to try anything else until I know what I'm doing. Thanks!

Do you know if the watch runs on a battery? If so, hopefully all it needs is a new battery. Repairing a pocketwatch requires a experience and jeweler's tools. This is probably not something you will be able to fix if a repair is needed. Most inexpensive watches cost more to repair than to replace. If it is an older watch, it may have some collector value and be worth the cost of repair.
Generally pocket watches have cases that close and the back opens much like the front. There are a few that require a special wrench to remove the case. Those have backs similar to a wristwatch. These typically have batteries. The indentation sounds like you have a case that the back unscrews. The indenation is for the wrench to get ahold and turn the back off. If so, attempting to pry the back off will destroy the case. Take the watch to some place that replaces watch batteries. They can open the back and replace your batteries. If the watch requires more work than that, take it to a jeweler.
